The Life You Want — 003

Critical thinking and vision

Hey you,

Welcome to the 3rd edition of The Life You Want.

Every edition will challenge what you’ve heard.
Enough yapping, lets jump in.

Jacob the Blind Man

Before I start, there is story I want to share.

Jacob was a blind man and he told stories for a living.

Once a girl came up to him and asked “What do you see when you shut your eyes, Jacob?”

“Well,” Jacob said

“Once upon a time there was a man who had a vision and began pursuing it.

Two others saw the first man’s vision and began following him.

In time, the children of those who followed asked their parents to describe what they saw.

But what the parents described appeared to be the coattails of the man in front of them

“When the children heard this, they turned aside from their parents’ vision, saying it was not worthy of pursuit..”

Jacob leaned towards the little girl and asked, “What do we learn from this story?”

The little was quiet.

“I’ll tell you” said Jacob,

“We discover children who deny what they haven’t experienced.“

“And we discover parents to believe in what they haven’t experienced.”

We can extract two key insights from this story:

1. Critical Thinking is Vital

The parents followed the man because they blindly trusted his vision.

The children refused to follow because they blindly decided to not trust the vision.

So who was right?

Both were wrong.

Even if their outcome may have been right, they never saw the vision to decide.

The ends don’t justify the means.

Both were wrong even though took opposing actions.

This goes into most modern day controversies and debates.

Nobody waits for the data, facts, information.

They simply jump to conclusions based on what their favorite influencer says.

When you look at it objectively, you can see how both sides bend the truth.

You can see both sides aren’t right.

And the truth lies in between.

2. Your Vision should be Yours

Don’t follow the vision of others.

The vision that they set up for you.

If you feel like you know where your life will go, you’re not living your life on your terms.

Your path forward should be hazy.

If it is crystal clear, someone defined that vision for you.

Think about it, where did your vision come from?

That YouTube Video?

Going back to the story :

The parents were wrong for not following their vision.

And the children were wrong for not willing to see a vision they haven’t seen.

Discovery

From all this we discover that the question isn’t:

“What do I see when I shut my eyes off?”

But instead:

“What do you see when you open yours?”
